In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we sometimes overlook the great spiritual milestones that Allah (SWT) has placed in our path to renew our faith and multiply our rewards. Among the greatest of these milestones in the Hijri calendar are the “Sacred Months” (Al-Ashhur Al-Hurum).
At Quran The Right Way, we believe that understanding our pure religion and reflecting on the verses of the Holy Quran is the key to a balanced and peaceful life. Therefore, we take you on a journey today to learn about the Sacred Months, their virtues, and why Allah the Almighty bestowed upon them such high honor.
What are the Sacred Months?
The Sacred Months are four specific months of the Islamic Hijri year that Allah has singled out for great status. They are explicitly mentioned in the Holy Quran: “Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them.” [Surah At-Tawbah: 36]
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) clarified these four months, which are:
- Dhul-Qa’dah
- Dhul-Hijjah
- Muharram (These three are consecutive).
- Rajab (A single month that comes between Jumada Al-Akhirah and Sha’ban).
Why Did Allah Magnify the Sacred Months?
These months are called “Sacred” (Hurum) for two main reasons, which illustrate the divine wisdom behind their magnification:
1. The Prohibition of Fighting: Allah (SWT) originally prohibited initiating fighting and wars during these months (except in self-defense). The historical and spiritual wisdom behind this was to secure the routes for the pilgrims and visitors to the Sacred House of Allah; Dhul-Qa’dah was for traveling to Hajj, Dhul-Hijjah for performing the rituals, and Muharram for returning safely. As for the month of Rajab, fighting was prohibited to secure the caravans of those performing Umrah in the middle of the year. This prohibition reflects the great message of Islam in spreading peace and security.
2. Magnification of Sins and Multiplication of Good Deeds: Allah says: “so do not wrong yourselves during them.” Scholars agree that committing oppression and sins during these months incurs a greater burden and harsher punishment than in other months, due to their high status with Allah. Conversely, righteous deeds, acts of worship, and drawing closer to Allah during the Sacred Months yield multiplied rewards. They are exceptional seasons for purifying the heart and correcting one’s course.
How Do We Make the Most of the Sacred Months?
As a Muslim seeking the pleasure of Allah, you can maximize the blessings of these months by:
- Fasting: It is highly recommended to fast frequently during them, especially in the month of Muharram (and the day of Ashura specifically).
- Increasing Remembrance (Dhikr) and Supplication (Dua): As instructed by the Prophet ﷺ.
- Avoiding Sins: In compliance with the divine command to avoid wronging oneself.
- Learning and Pondering the Holy Quran: There is no better time than these blessed months to start deepening your relationship with the Book of Allah and understanding its original meanings.
